On a flight from Sydney to Wellington

Just now, the older man sitting across the aisle from me pulled two little Whittaker’s chocolates from his bag.

He put one on my tray and smiled.

I thought it might be to thank me for lending him a pen earlier on during the flight, when he had needed one to complete his entry card.

Then he said, “It’s chocolate. You didn’t have anything to eat.”

I hadn’t booked a meal on this flight. And he had noticed, and had wanted to help.
