Flying over the Great Barrier Reef

20 July, 2017

Hamilton Island is absolutely gorgeous – there is no doubt about it.  However, there is nothing quite so stunning as flying over the island, out over the expanse of ocean and casually gazing down over the Great Barrier Reef as it stretched out below you in all its shimmering aquamarine glory.

During a recent holiday on Hamilton Island, we had the opportunity of taking such a flight with the lovely Hamilton Island Air staff.  Six of us piled in the back of a small plane, and off we went!  It was a clear and sunny day, despite the fact that it was the middle of winter, and the views were breath-taking from beginning to end.

The water around the islands is incredibly clear and from our vantage point, we were able to take in all the glorious shades of the reef below us.

The whole flight was a highlight of the trip, but some particularly spectacular scenes included the Heart Reef  (which, don’t let the brochures deceive you – is surprisingly small) and the amazing aerial views of Whitehaven Beach.  Stunning!
